Challenge stars are a special metric of progress in the Bombs vs. Sleepwalkers game series. While you can complete every level (or every most important level) to reach normal ending, challenge stars are necessary to collect in order to get a better ending.
Challenge stars allow for replayability and addition of difficulty into the established levels without implementing a difficulty setting for the whole game.

Because of the nature of the visual novel genre, there are no challenge stars in Bombs vs. Sleepwalkers Origins.
In BvS 1

In BvS 1, most levels have 3 “objective” challenge stars. You can choose these stars to collect, each of the stars have their objectives you need to complete to get a star.
Most levels also have 2 more stars (making it up to 5 in total per level): one is for Hardcore Mode and one is for collecting a certain amount of score points (do not skip Bonus Stages, because those are an easy way to get a lot of points).
